Jan van IJken (Amersfoort, 1965) is a documentary photographer.
Recent projects are New Neighbours and A touch of Divinity - Images of devotion in Eastern Europe. For this last series, done between 1997-2000, he photographed pilgrimages, liturgies and other religious rituals in Poland, Rumania, Slovakia and Ukraine.
He uses natural light whenever possible, with an eye for detail and composition. It is evident from his work that he deeply cares about the people which are his subject matter.

My work may be interpreted as a futuristic landscape, taking you along the frayed edges of society and life, holdingthe threat of an imminent apocalypse. The individualistic of man dwelling in the periphery of society, isolated and dissolved in his surroundings.
Mijn werk laat zich lezen als een futurisch landschap dat je meeneemt langs de rafelranden van de maatschappij en het leven, met de dreiging van een naderende apocalyps.
